A Parking Garage LED Upgrade Built for Low Ceilings and Camera Performance

Parking garages punish shortcuts in lighting design. Ceilings are low, surfaces are concrete, and drivers and pedestrians share tight sightlines.
This garage project was designed around those constraints: fixtures selected for glare control at low mounting heights, light levels calculated to hold uniform across every level, and illumination planned to support security camera performance rather than fight it.
The result is a garage that feels open and reads clearly on camera, around the clock.
The Project
A parking garage is one of the hardest environments in commercial parking lighting. Outdoor rules of thumb fail under an eight or nine foot ceiling.
A fixture that performs well on a thirty foot pole becomes a glare source at mounting heights this low, and glare is exactly what a garage cannot afford: it blinds drivers at ramp transitions and washes out camera footage.
OSL's design approached the garage the way we approach any site: modeling first, product second. Light levels and uniformity were calculated for each area of the structure, including drive lanes, parking bays, ramp transitions, pedestrian paths, and entries, where daytime brightness contrast is hardest to manage.
Fixture selection prioritized optics that put light on the task plane and keep it out of drivers' eyes. High color rendering supports camera performance, because the specification decisions that affect uniformity also directly affect the quality of evidence available if an incident ever occurs.
Converting a garage from legacy fixtures to a properly designed LED system also changes the operating math: energy consumption drops 50 to 75 percent or more, and fixtures matched to their operating environment last longer, which matters in a structure where every maintenance visit means a lift in an active drive lane.

If your parking field has bright spots under the poles and shadows in between, the gap is usually in the design, not the fixtures.
