Even Light Across a Retail Anchor Store Parking Field
The aerial photo tells the story better than the numbers do. This retail anchor store parking field was designed and installed to one standard: even light across every row, drive aisle, and pedestrian route, with no dark gaps between fixture zones. The parking lot lighting design started from the site plan, modeled zone by zone, and the fixtures were selected for what each location required. The result is a parking field that reads as safe from the moment a customer turns in.
The Project
A retail anchor store parking field is the property's front door. It is where customers form their first impression, where security cameras either perform or fail, and where liability incidents are most likely to happen. Commercial parking lighting at this scale is an engineering problem, and the variables interact: mounting height affects pole spacing, pole spacing affects uniformity, and uniformity determines whether the field has dark zones.
OSL's design process modeled this site zone by zone before any fixture was selected: the parking field, drive aisles, pedestrian crossings, and building entries each carry their own footcandle targets and uniformity ratios. Because the specification was written to performance parameters rather than a product line, fixture selection drew on the full field of manufacturers, and each pole location received the beam distribution that position actually required. Perimeter fixtures direct light inward toward the parking surface. Interior fixtures distribute light evenly in all directions.
Installation followed the specification through OSL's coordinated contractor process, so the design intent reached the field intact. What the aerial photo shows is the outcome that matters: uniformity. Research in lighting design has established that uniformity is often more important to perceived safety than raw light levels, and a field that is evenly lit at moderate levels performs better than one that is brighter on average but full of shadows. Even light. Every corner.
