Past Project: One Uniformity Standard From Entry to Roof Deck on a Parking Ramp

A parking ramp is really several lighting environments stacked on top of each other. Enclosed lower levels behave like a garage. The roof deck behaves like an open parking field. Ramp transitions between them are where eyes adjust and incidents happen. This project carried one uniformity standard through all of it, so a driver or pedestrian moving from entry to roof deck experiences consistent light the entire way.
The Project
The structure presented three distinct problems. The enclosed levels needed glare control at low mounting heights and light levels that hold uniform between structural columns.
The open roof deck needed pole mounted fixtures designed against the same standards as any exterior parking field, including light trespass control at the property line. And the transitions needed careful attention, because the contrast between a bright opening and a dim interior is where visibility fails first.
OSL modeled each level and each transition zone independently, establishing footcandle targets and uniformity ratios for every area before selecting fixtures. Uniformity ratio is the relationship between the brightest and darkest points on the same surface, and it is the measure that determines whether a structure has dark zones.
A design can meet its average light level and still fail where it matters. Modeling both average and minimum values across every zone is how that failure gets prevented.
Because the fixtures throughout the structure came from a manufacturing-agnostic specification, the enclosed levels and the roof deck hold a consistent color temperature and a consistent character of light, even though the two environments demanded different fixture types.
That coherence is a design standard, and it is what makes the structure feel like one facility instead of several.

Lighting a parking ramp is a long-term commitment, and ongoing lighting system monitoring keeps performance from drifting as fixtures age. If your structure has levels that feel different after dark, we'd love to help.
