Do LED-to-LED Re-Retrofit Projects Qualify for Utility Rebates?

The first wave of commercial LED upgrades is now old enough to raise a new rebate question. Owners who converted parking fields and site lighting from HID to LED between 2010 and 2015 often assume the incentive chapter is closed. In more territories than a year ago, it is not.
LED-to-LED upgrade eligibility has expanded to 22 percent more utility programs in the past year, as utilities recognize the meaningful efficiency gains available from upgrading first-generation LED systems to current technology. The key requirement is demonstrating measurable energy savings against the existing installation, which requires direct confirmation with individual utilities in most markets.
If your portfolio includes first-generation LED installations from 2010 to 2015, those properties are worth evaluating now.
What has to be true for the rebate to hold
A rebate comes directly from your utility company. It reduces the upfront cost of your project and is tied to the energy savings your upgrade will deliver. It depends on your utility territory, your current system type, and your fixture count.
Two conditions still decide most outcomes. Every fixture we specify is confirmed against the DLC Qualified Products List before the specification is finalized. Most programs require pre-approval before any product is purchased or installed. A first-generation LED system that is replaced with a non-listed product, or replaced before approval, can lose the incentive even when the energy savings are real.
What this looks like across a portfolio
This is exactly where OSL's portfolio-level process delivers the most value. Different utilities have different programs, different eligibility rules, different pre-approval deadlines, and different documentation standards. We track all of it across your portfolio, identify which properties have active programs right now, flag upcoming deadlines, and manage each submission to the specific requirements of the utility territory in question.
Some territories have more robust programs than others, and program availability changes throughout the year as utility budgets are funded and exhausted. If your territory doesn't have an active program right now, we'll tell you that clearly, and we'll flag it when something opens up that your properties qualify for. We're not going to recommend a project just to generate a submission.
How the money shows up in the case
For HID-to-LED retrofits, payback timelines with full rebate capture often compress to one to four years. For first-generation LED re-retrofits, rebate eligibility has expanded significantly as utilities recognize the efficiency gains available from newer technology. We won't give you a number until we've looked at your specific situation, but we can give you a preliminary range in an initial conversation at no cost or obligation.
The survey produces the measured baseline most custom programs need. The design confirms DLC listing before the specification is locked. Procurement protects that listing through to the truck. Installation is held to the approved specification so the rebate file and the work in the ground match.
When it does not make sense
We'll tell you honestly when the numbers don't support it. If a program is not open in that territory, or the remaining useful life of the current system does not support the next cycle, the better conversation may be planning, not a submission. An initial conversation costs you nothing.
